Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness: An Excellent Movie Criticised Over "Sexist" Storyline?

WARNING: This post contains spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

For a movie that really tests our ability to keep up with the truly mind-bending, infinite realities of the multiverse, it's safe to say that Marvel has, once again, delivered an exceptional masterpiece that cracks the door wide open to a multitude of possibilities within the MCU.

Some believe the movie has a sexist narrative to it

Considering the film's director, Sam Raimi, has admitted to watching only parts of WandaVision - and what an integral part the Scarlet Witch herself plays in the franchise so far - he did a great job in capturing the heartache Wanda experienced by the time WandaVision came to its season finale.

But, something that the film has been criticised for is depicting Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda as a "mad mom", thus presenting the argument that the production is somewhat sexist because she goes on a mission to reach her children in another universe (by means of absorbing the power of the multiverse-hopping America Chavez), despite her two sons being created by the magic of the Scarlet Witch part way through WandaVision.

Is it really sexist?

In short: I don't think it is. Why? Because the same comments were not made when the likes of Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye/Ronin, went on a killing spree after half the universe turned to dust at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. He grieved for his entire family and took that out on a bunch of people. Of course it could be said that he was only targeting criminals who survived the snap, but does that ultimately make it right to play judge, jury and executioner?

And if we removed any comparisons such as the above, what we're talking about is that a mother's love for her children is so great that branding any portrayal of such a thing as "sexist" is a complete misrepresentation of the reasons why a mother would go to such lengths.

Overall review of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Being a huge Marvel fan, it was fantastic to see a darker twist to the franchise, as well as introducing new possibilities (similar to those explored in the What if...? series).

The dynamics and graphics were amazing, although the third eye shown on Doctor Strange's forehead could have been more polished, and the battle of song notes between the Doctor Strange doppelgangers was about as cheesy as the Eurovision Song Contest! However, the storyline was clean and provided a lot of groundwork to build upon as Phase 4 reaches its climax.

I can't wait for more instalments from the MCU with Ms. Marvel debuting in June 2022 on Disney+, Thor: Love and Thunder in July 2022 and so on!

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is in cinemas now.
